About Whats Some Good Music For A Trip To New Orleans

Whats Some Good Music For A Trip To New Orleans?
I'm going on a mission trip to New Orleans. I know its the birthplace of Jazz. What are some good songs to listen to on the plane to get me into the New Orleans Mood? Thanks :)

Answer 1 :
Anything that is in the mainstream genre of jazz will help you out. Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and Duke Ellington are good places to start. More good artists include Gerry Mulligan, Wes Montgomery, and even Aaron Goldberg.
Answer 2 :
Fats Domino--Walkin' to New Orleans This one always gets me pumped up when traveling to N.O. If you're looking for some local stuff that's not jazz but pretty good, try the pop-rock/alternative band Better Than Ezra. Try these two sentimental New Orleans-based songs of theirs: King of New Orleans and WWOZ (both from the Friction Baby album). Good luck, hope your trip to the Crescent City is a great one!

About I'm doin' a story and it was about my trip to new orleans. What are some ideas for titles

I'm doin' a story and it was about my trip to new orleans. What are some ideas for titles?
Do you think 'Fun Below Sea Level' would be a good title? since i had fun and new orleans is below sea level. GUYS! I SAID MY TRIP! i don't live there! I did not go during the hurricane. I went for a cheer competition.

Answer 1 :
The title is fine, and glad you enjoyed your visit. Actually, most of New Orleans is above sea level - esepcailly the French Quarter and other old parts of the city. "Fun At Low Altitude" would be another version. Good luck!
Answer 2 :
How about "Laissez le bon temps rouler!" which is a French phrase that means Let the good times roll, and is a commonly used phrase by locals all over south Lousiana. Edit: What about "Cheering on the Bayou"?
Answer 3 :
that's not bad but it makes me think you went scuba diving. how about "No Basements" or "In the bowl"
Answer 4 :
Im Sorry But Fun Is NOT A GOOD WAY OF DESCRIBING THE HURRICANE OR THE FACT THAT OUR CITY IS A WRECK.
Answer 5 :
no offense but that title is kinda cheesy... add some more info on wat u did there
Answer 6 :
New Orleans Forever Proud

About Planning a trip to New Orleans in May 2011. I have time share. Any suggestions on where to stay

Planning a trip to New Orleans in May 2011. I have time share. Any suggestions on where to stay?
I am going with 4 friends and would like to stay at a nice place and one that is close to most things. If you are familiar with time share resorts in the area ---please make suggestion. Thanks.
New Orleans - 4 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Well I'm not too sure about time shares in the area. However, try the following sites for condos/homes for rent. They are often very decently priced and a lot of times you may find a great deal, even in the French Quarter (I've also noticed some time share owners use these sites as well). If you can find a home in the French Quarter stay there and you will be close to everything you want to do. And if you decide to venture further for a Katrina tour, or a self-guided tour of the Garden District, utilize the streetcar and the various shuttles that pick up at nearly every corner. www.vrbo.com www.homeaway.com www.vacationrentals.com
Answer 2 :
It sounds like you already belong to a time-share service and want to know which ones are best in New Orleans. If yes, what location choices are being offered to you?

Answer 4 :
It depends what you are looking for in your accommodations. I'm assuming that you are going to try to exchange to the location. I'd suggest the Mardi Gras Manor, the Courtyards or the Wyndham La Belle Maison. The Wyndham is more of a higher end resort. The Courtyards is rather small and quaint and may not accommodate all five of you well. I'd suggest that you go to the RCI directory and take a look.

About How much Money Do I need to Bring for a 4 day trip to New Orleans

How much Money Do I need to Bring for a 4 day trip to New Orleans?
I am visiting my fiancee's hometown for 4 days starting February 19th through the 24th I heard something about "FAT TUESDAY" but I dont know what that is, anywho I need to know how much money I should plan on spending out there and also if anyone could throw in some great attractions that last all night long I would greatly appreciate it?

Answer 1 :
Nots and bring a gun too - it's very dangerous
Answer 2 :
$200
Answer 3 :
go with 20 bucks those bums that are still there dont have anything to waste money on. even the pot is garbage.
Answer 4 :
google "fat tuesday" it depends on how much you spend normally and how much you are willing to spend. are you going out a lot? buy a lot of drinks? gifts? food? supplies? at least 100 beans a day even more
Answer 5 :
Bring an ATM card.
Answer 6 :
I wouldn't bring more than $75. When traveling to a city you don't know well, you really shouldn't carry a lot of cash. If you have a credit card that would be much better. And, most credit cards offer cash-back. And like somebody already said, new orleans is dangerous, so be ready for anything, and don;t carry a lot of money.
Answer 7 :
I am a 29 year resident of New Orleans. I would suggest that you bring no less than $100 for each day. Being that you are coming for Fat Tuesday AKA Mardi Gras, there will be tons of things you will want to get. For the parades alon there will be trucks up & down the street selling all sorts of gadgets from beads to panties. As far as all night partying goes, there are tons of clubs open all night but the only place You need to go is to Bourbon St., it is an all night party all by itself. Not to mention the hosts of clubs and daiquiri shop it's lined with. If gambling is more your thing Harrah's casino is located a convenient 3 blocks away from Bourbon. BTW, the place to be on Mardi Gras day is Canal St. which intersects with Bourbon. And you don't need it a gun, it is not as bad as they make it out to be. Just stay with a group and you will be fine. Whatever the case may be HAVE FUN!!! What happens here stays here!!!!!
Answer 8 :
Went to New Orleans not long ago. The French Quarter is much nicer now. There is a renewed effort to keep it up. So definately check it out. New Orleans is much different than most towns. The night life in the French Quarter at least, lasts pretty much til dawn. Music coming out of almost every door you pass. It's ok to take a drink with you down the street (in plastic only). Pretty laid back. I never felt in danger and no one ever bothered me. Don't be stupid about your safety, but don't "take a gun" either. Things there are about as expensive as any tourist destination, but during Mardi Gras "Fat Tuesday" things will likely be more expensive. During Mardi Gras you may find things more rauchous as it is kind of a non-stop party. The 24th is Mardi Gras so you may miss it if you are leaving that day. If you are driving be aware that they have a ton of camera's at intersections and I laughingly said that is how they are making the money to rebuild. Those things go off every few seconds...big money! The street cars are cool...where else could you get a tour of the city for $1.25 (exact change only). If you want a expensive but worth it dining experience, try Commander's Palace. Awesome. Go to the lunch it's much cheaper than dinner unless you really want to spend the bucks. The cemetaries are legendary because they are all above ground and some are very ornate. Worth a walk though unless you are spooked by that sort of thing. Be sure to tour the areas hit by Katrina and marvel at how well they are recovering. Good luck and you absolutely must try the Beignets! Hot fried bread loaded with powered suger! A New Orleans staple.
Answer 9 :
Avoid carrying a large amount of cash, especially during Mardi Gras. Credit Cards, ATM Card, or Travelers Checks are a good idea whenever you travel. Plan on about $100 a day, give or take depending on your drinking preferences. I agree that Canal Street is the place to be for Lundi (Monday) Gras and Mardi Gras. For the night scene check out Frenchmen Street. Live music and good bars, normally open until 4 or 5 am. However, I currently live in New Orleans I certainly DO NOT have a gun or feel like I am in great peril every time I cross the street. Just be aware of the area you are in and do not go wondering off alone at night. If it looks shady, its a clear indication to stay way. A little common sense and sticking to the tourist areas will make for a safe and fun trip.
Answer 10 :
Mardi Gras Day is on February 24th this year so you will visit during the height of the Carnival season. Go to www. mardigras.com for more info on Carnival in New Orleans. The FAQ section may be particularly useful. An incomplete guide to bars & clubs: www.neworleanscheapdrinks.com How much money to bring depends on what you plan to do, but partying all night usually isn't cheap (at least it's not cheap for guys). As the other answers suggest, budget $100 per day. Take a debit card or credit card you can use to get money from ATMs, but don't wait until you are in the French Quarter to find one. The ATMs downtown and along the parade routes tend to run out of money quickly during Carnival. Crowds in the French Quarter can get really think and being in them can be like inside a crowded elevator. There can be pickpockets in the crowd (I have never had a problem) so carry your cash, ID, and credit/debit cards in a front pocket rather than in a wallet or purse. Otherwise you only need the basic common sense required everywhere to be safe. "Dick Cheney", "Getting Old", Dave S", and similar do not know what they are talking about. Hope you have a great time!

About How Much Money Should I Save For A Trip To New Orleans

How Much Money Should I Save For A Trip To New Orleans?
I'm From Florida, Me and A friend are driving to new orleans for about 5 days, it takes 8 hours to drive there...how much should we save for like hotels, food, gas, fun etc???
New Orleans - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
well I would guess you will need Gas: $80 +/- Hotel: you can usually find a fairly nice hotel from $90-140 a night (maybe less with Internet specials) Food: meals can run about $10 each meal on up entertainment: I would try to budget $30 +/- a day if you can (you can easily spend more) Alcohol: $endless It really depends on how you want to travel but hopefully this helps. Have fun.
Answer 2 :
We used about $100 in gas (to drive a little less than you did); you might want to make it $120-150 just to be safe (with rising gas prices). I'm not sure how much hotels run in New Orleans, but I'm pretty sure they're expensive. Try this website to see what works best for you: http://travel.yahoo.com/p-hotel-191501939-new_orleans_hotels-i?fromiy=1 Food in the French Quarter is also pretty expensive. It's also usually rainy and HOT (so you'll want LOTS to drink). And of course, you'll want to take tours and stuff. All together, I'd save at LEAST a couple thousand, just to make sure everything is covered. Take a credit card also, just in case something happens (flat tire, etc.). Have fun, be safe (STICK TOGETHER!!) and enjoy! I love New Orleans; the city itself is disgusting, but the culture is so amazing!
Answer 3 :
the same as if you were going to any tourist area in Fla. it all depends if you stay at the Hyatt or the holiday inn. eat burgers or steaks? buy t shirts or blue dawg prints? is fun to you drinking $10 drinks on the patio or eating $4 plates of sugar covered donuts? you can spend a little or a lot. fun is hard to put a $ on. riding the street car is fun to me but some ppl would rather sit in the sun on a park bench so it's all a matter of choice. www . care2 . com if someone says to you "I bet you a dollar I can tell you where you got your shoes at" tell them yeah the same place you got yours "on your feet"

We are taking a trip to New Orleans for August 28th-August 30th, its my birthday present. I have never been and I have wanted to go so badly. How neat! Anyways, we are definately eating at NOLA its one of Emeril's restaurants and I want to eat at Bubba Gump's Shrimp House. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=family+restaurants+in+new+orleans&aq=1&oq=family+restaurants+in+new&aqi=g3
Answer 2 :
It isn't a restaurant but you really need to go to Cafe Du Monde You need to try the beignets!!!
Answer 3 :
Well like the others said Cafe Du Monde and NOLA are great places to go. It really depends on how much you want to spend. Because the restaurants that you hear about in the news and such are normally on the expensive side. But Camellia Grill is a great place to go. Hears their website: http://www.camelliagrill.net/ Emeril's restaurants are always great so any of those would be great to eat at. Broussard's is another great place. A nice dress-up restaurant. Sort of on the expensive side but great food. www.broussards.com On what you said about the crime thing. Its not bad in the tourist heavy areas. The crime that goes on is only between criminals most of the time. Also the crime isn't in the french quarter its more in the bad parts of town. But still be cautious as if you were in your own town. Don't go down dark alleys and things tlike that. Take the obvious precautions but I wouldn't be to scared if I were you. **OH!!!! And another place to take your kids that just recently opened is the Audobon Insecterium!! It's absolutely awesome! Its pretty new and it's just really cool. Your kids should have fun going to that!!!** HOPE IT HELPS!!!!

There are plenty of homeless in Jackson Square (in the French Quarter). How about giving out Care Packages?
Answer 2 :
Check out VolunteerMatch. Even if there isn't an opportunity posted for the specific days you will be there, contact organizations listed on VolunteerMatch and let them know what your availability is and what skills you want to donate (don't just write and say, "I want to help!"). Arts organizations -- museums, theaters, music groups, etc. -- should be very easy to find in the New Orleans area using Google. Contact them and, again, let them know what your availability is and what skills you want to donate (don't just write and say, "I want to help!").
Answer 3 :
The New Orleans Museum of Art is always looking for volunteers: http://www.noma.org/volunteer.html However, you will probably only be here for a few days. Please just enjoy yourself and have a good time in our city!

About School Trip To New Orleans

School Trip To New Orleans?
My friends and I are a group of motivated high schoolers, who are interested in helping the relief effort in New Orleans. Obviously, we would need a teacher to chaperon and go with us, but how would we get the actual trip set up? Which organizations work with high schools?

Answer 1 :
Talk with your school counsler she/he would know everything about it and if she doesn't then ask your chruch if they don't know then you can red cross and ask them what kind of programs they for kids like you. Good luck
Answer 2 :
See if you can link up with another school in New Orleans to see how people your age are dealing with it and how you can help them. I know City Park is always taking volunteers for cleanup, but maybe a partner school can guide you somewhere else.

About I am taking a trip to New Orleans

I am taking a trip to New Orleans?
I am taking a trip to New Orleans, just me and my dog Lucy. I would like to stay in the nicest, safest area. Would that be the French Quarter?
New Orleans - 5 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
I went there in August and stayed at The Royal Sonesta on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter I felt very safe
Answer 2 :
I went to Frommer's travel guide online, and found a great list of hotels, along with information about the best areas to stay. That link is included below. I also am sending a link to the Lonely Plant travel guide. This is also a section about places to stay in New Orleans. Hope this helps!
Answer 3 :
New Orleans is safe for visitors, and for residents. Just use the same basic common sense needed in every city in the world and you will be fine. The French Quarter is the best place to stay for tourists. However, not all hotels welcome pets. Check www.frenchquarterhotels.com for some non-chain properties. Hope you have a great time!
Answer 4 :
You will be safe. Most people that are shot and killed are in drug trade.ill tell you 95% of the crime is over drugs. The French Quarter is nice http://www.starwoodhotels.com/whotels/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=2030 Above is a nice hotel
Answer 5 :
You might consider a bed and breakfast... there are several wonderful ones in the area.

About Where should we go on a girls trip to New Orleans

Where should we go on a girls trip to New Orleans?
I need some fun stuff to do while in New Orleans (besides the obvious, drinking). Shopping, tours, food???
New Orleans - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
You have to visit the french quarter and bourbon street, both places also have pretty good restaurants. Tours of the old grave yards are fun in groups and shopping, well anywhere downtown. A restaurant i recommend with great local cajun food is Cafe 615 Home of da Wabbit, the food is incredible. It is on the other side of the river though, but the food is worth it. Hope this helps:)
Answer 2 :
Get on one of their trolley type buses and tour the city..saint charles street and such.
Answer 3 :
Things to do in New Orleans: Mardi Gras and the Jazz Festival are world famous events, but New Orleans hosts many festivals and celebrations throughout the year: www.nola.com/festivals There are many tours offered and examples are: www.greylineneworleans.com www.hauntedhistorytours.com http://www.saveourcemeteries.org/tours/index.htm The Saint Charles Streetcar is the oldest continuously operating street railway in the world and is a "tourist attraction" in its own right. It is part of the public transit system, as are the Canal Street and Riverfront streetcar lines: www.norta.com There is always music, but the bands change: Go to www.bestofneworleans.com and click on Music then Listings or to www.offbeat.com and click on Listings, then Music. Note that music clubs often advertise "No Cover", meaning there is no charge for entering. However, clubs with "No Cover" often require that customers buy a beverage each for every "set" of music (which can be every 20 minutes) so KNOW THE PRICE before you sit down. Clubs do that because some people will sit in the club all evening drinking nothing (clubs only make money from the drinks they sell - not from the music). It is also a good idea to pay for each round of drinks (in clubs on Bourbon Street) as it is delivered so there can't be any confusion at the end of the evening. An incomplete guide to bars & clubs: http://www.10best.com/New_Orleans,LA/Nightlife/ www.neworleanscheapdrinks.com About certain alcoholic beverages: Realize that some famous drinks are VERY potent compared with regular cocktails that have only 1 to 1 ½ ounces of alcohol. For example, a Hurricane is basically 3 or 4 ounces of rum in something like red Kool-Aid, and a Hand Grenade has at least 4 ½ ounces of Everclear + rum + vodka mixed with melon liquor. They don’t necessarily taste like an alcoholic beverage and it is easy to over-indulge. Wander around the French Quarter, enjoy the architecture, watch the street entertainers (do tip), and visit some of the historic buildings that have been turned into museums (go to www.frenchquarter.com and click on Historic Attractions). Assuming the weather is good, you can collect a sandwich lunch and eat in the riverfront park (watch the shipping) or in Jackson Square (a very nice park). The Riverwalk shopping center has an air-conditioned food court with dining overlooking the river (www.riverwalkmarketplace.com). The Canal Place shopping center is in the French Quarter and has a cinema and higher-end shopping (Saks 5th Avenue, Brooks Brothers, etc.). Magazine Street is a miles-long shopping district: www.magazinestreet.com Purchases of art may be tax-exempt: http://www.crt.state.la.us/culturaldistricts/DistrictMaps.aspx The lobby for the Westin Canal Place Hotel is on the 11th floor and overlooks the French Quarter. It is a great place for an afternoon drink/snack:(www.westin.com). Cafe du Monde is in the French Quarter and you shouldn't miss having cafe au lait & beignets (www.cafedumonde.com). Another great coffee shop is the Croissant d'Or (at 617 Ursulines Street), which is open from 7:00am to 2:00pm and has food in addition to pastry. The Palm Court restaurant is very nice, has moderate prices, and offers traditional live jazz starting at 8:00pm: 1204 Decatur Street, tel 504-525-0200 (reservations are important and they are not open every day). The Palm Court is closed from about mid-July 25th to sometime in August each year: http://www.palmcourtjazzcafe.com/ Maximo's Italian Grill has great food and atmosphere: 1117 Decatur Street in the French Quarter, (504) 586-8883. www.maximosgrill.com All of the famous restaurants (Antoine's, Arnaud's, Brennan's, Commander's Palace, etc.) reopened after Katrina. The Pelican Club (on Exchange Alley in the FQ) is not as well known but is the same type experience. Reservations are a good idea, and probably essential on weekends. Tujaques Restaurant (823 Decatur Street) is very traditional and has moderate prices: www.tujaguesrestaurant.com Cafe Degas is a very French restaurant near City Park at 3127 Esplanade - which is not within walking distance of downtown (5 to 10 minutes by taxi). They are closed on Mondays & Tuesdays (504-945-5635). www.cafedegas.com The Napoleon House restaurant is at 500 Chartres Street in the FQ, and has a menu of great local dishes: www.napoleonhouse.com More restaurant suggestions: http://www.10best.com/New_Orleans,LA/Restaurants/ Preservation Hall has traditional live Jazz, and doesn’t serve alcohol so all ages are welcome: www.preservationhall.com New Orleans has ballet, opera, a symphony orchestra, and theatre: www.nobadance.com www.neworleansopera.org www.lpomusic.com www.lepetittheatre.com There is a free ferry across the Mississippi at the "foot" of Canal Street. It is a short trip but like a harbor cruise w/o a guide: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/canal_street_ferry The Aquarium, Audubon Zoo, and the new Insectarium are world-class attractions (www.auduboninstitute.org) and you should see them if you can. The Zoo is several miles from downtown. You can drive to the Zoo (which has free parking) or take public transit from the French Quarter. The Louisiana State Museum is in the French Quarter: http://lsm.crt.state.la.us/ New Orleans is also home to a number of other museums, such as the National World War II Museum (http://www.nationalww2museum.org/) and the New Orleans Museum of Art (www.noma.org). Both can be reached by public transit: The WWII museum is in the central business district but a long walk from the French Quarter. NOMA is not within walking distance of downtown but has free parking. Go to www.neworleansmuseums.com for info on more museums. Harrah’s Casino is in the Central Business District: www.harrahs.com (age 21 required for entry) New Orleans City Park has a variety of attractions + free parking. (www.neworleanscitypark.com). Check www.frenchquarter.com and http://www.nola.com/visitor/ for ideas about other things to do. I hope you have a great time!
